Understands your car insurance and what’s covered in it

Basic personal auto insurance is mandatory by most states and provides you with some financial protection in the event of an accident. But is that enough? What are the options? Learn how car insurance works and what types of coverage are available.

Understanding the basics of auto insurance

Auto insurance is an agreement between you and the insurance company that protects you from financial loss in the event of an accident or theft. In return for paying your premium, the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as described in your policy.

Provides coverage for auto insurance:

Property – such as the damage or theft of your car.

Liability – Your legal liability to others for bodily injury or property damage.

Medical – Injury treatment costs, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses

Basic personal auto insurance is mandatory by most U.S. states and the laws are different. Individual insurance coverage is assessed individually (in a la carte) to customize the amount of coverage to suit your specific needs and budget.

Policies are usually issued for a period of six months or one year and are renewable. The insurance company sends a notice when it is time to renew the policy and pay your premium.

Who is covered by my auto insurance and under what circumstances?

Your auto policy will cover you and other family members in your policy. Whether you drive or someone else’s car (with their permission). This policy also provides coverage if someone who is not in your policy is driving your car with your consent.

Your personal auto policy only covers personal driving, whether you are on your way to work, driving or traveling. If you use your car for business purposes but it will not provide coverage instance for example, if you deliver pizza.

Personal auto insurance will also not provide coverage if you use your own car to provide transportation to others through ride sharing services like Uber or Lift. Some auto insurance companies are now offering complementary insurance products (at extra cost) for vehicle owners who provide ride sharing services.

Is auto insurance coverage mandatory?

Auto insurance requirements vary from state to state. If you are financing a car, your lender may have its own requirements. Car owners need to carry in almost every state.

Physical Injury Liability – which includes expenses related to an injury or death that may occur to you or another driver while you are driving.

Property Damage Liability – which allows you or another driver to compensate others for damage caused by another vehicle or other property such as a fence, building or utility pole.

Also, there are many states you need to carry:

Medical Payment or Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which pays for the cost of treatment for injuries to you or your passengers. It will also include lost wages and other related expenses.

Uninsured motorist coverage compensates you when there is no auto insurance or an accident is caused by a driver during a hit-and-run. You can also purchase insurance under motor driver coverage, when a driver lacks adequate coverage to pay for a serious accident.

Even if coverage of PIP and uninsured motorists is available in your state, consider adding them to your policy for greater financial security.

What other types of auto insurance coverage are common?

Although most basic, legally binding auto insurance covers the damage to your car. It does not detect the damage to your own car. To cover your own car, you should consider the following options:

A collision compensates you for damage to your vehicle that occurs as a result of a collision with another vehicle or other object. For example, a tree or maintenance when you are doing something wrong. While collision coverage will not pay you for mechanical failure or normal wear and tear in your car. It will cover damage from potholes or from rolling your car.

Comprehensive provides extensive coverage against theft and damage such as collisions such as fire, flood, vandalism, hail, falling rocks or trees and other hazards – even being hit by an asteroid!

Glass coverage provides coverage from windshield damage, which is common. Some auto policies include non-removable glass coverage. Including side windows, rear windows and a glass sunroof. Or you can buy complementary glass coverage.

What is gap insurance and do I need it?

Collisions and expansions only cover the market value of your car, not what you paid for it. And new cars are declining rapidly. If your car is in total quantity or stolen, there may be a “gap” between what you owe on the vehicle and your insurance coverage. To cover this, you can look to buy Gap Insurance to pay the difference. Note that for leased vehicles, gap coverage usually rotates in the case of your lease.

NOTE: Car insurance laws are set and enforced at the state level, and 49 of the 50 states in America require all drivers to carry an active car insurance policy. New Hampshire is the only state in which you do not legally need to have car insurance. As long as you can show proof of financial responsibility.
