The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is a landmark health care reform law that was passed in 2010. The ACA has expanded access to health insurance, improved the quality and affordability of coverage, and reduced the number of uninsured people in the country. But did you know that the ACA also offers some hidden benefits that you may not be aware of? These benefits can help you save money, get preventive care, and access additional services that are not typically covered by health insurance. In this blog post, we will reveal some of the ACA plan features you didn’t know about and how they can benefit you.
Free Preventive Care Services
One of the most valuable features of the ACA is that it requires most health insurance plans to cover certain preventive care services at no cost to you. This means that you don’t have to pay any copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles for these services, as long as you get them from a provider in your plan’s network. Some of the preventive care services that are covered by the ACA include:
- Screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, HIV, and various types of cancer
- Immunizations for flu, hepatitis, measles, and other diseases
- Counseling for tobacco use, alcohol abuse, depression, and domestic violence
- Contraceptive methods and counseling for women
- Well-woman visits and prenatal care for pregnant women
- Well-child visits and developmental screenings for children
By getting these preventive care services, you can stay healthy, detect and treat health problems early, and avoid more costly and complicated treatments in the future.
Essential Health Benefits
Another feature of the ACA is that it requires health plans offered in the individual and small group markets to cover 10 categories of essential health benefits. These are the minimum services that a health plan must provide to meet the ACA standards. The 10 categories of essential health benefits are:
- Ambulatory patient services, such as outpatient care and home health care
- Emergency services, such as emergency room visits and ambulance services
- Hospitalization, such as inpatient care and surgery
- Maternity and newborn care, such as delivery and postnatal care
- Mental health and substance use disorder services, such as counseling and medication
- Prescription drugs, such as generic and brand-name drugs
- Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, such as physical therapy and hearing aids
- Laboratory services, such as blood tests and biopsies
- Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management, such as the services mentioned above
- Pediatric services, including oral and vision care for children
By covering these essential health benefits, the ACA ensures that you have access to a comprehensive and quality health care package that meets your needs.

Additional Benefits and Services
Besides the preventive care services and the essential health benefits, the ACA also offers some additional benefits and services that you may not know about. These include:
- Coverage for pre-existing conditions, which means that you cannot be denied coverage or charged more because of a health problem you had before you enrolled in a plan.
- No annual or lifetime limits, which means that your plan cannot cap the amount of benefits you can receive in a year or in your lifetime.
- Young adult coverage, which allows you to stay on your parent’s health plan until you turn 26, even if you are married, have a job, or live on your own.
- Health insurance marketplace, which is a website where you can compare and buy health insurance plans online. You can also see if you qualify for a subsidy or Medicaid to help you pay for your plan.
- Consumer assistance program, which is a program that helps you with any questions or complaints you have about your health insurance. You can contact your state’s consumer assistance program or call 1-800-318-2596 to get help.
These additional benefits and services can help you get the most out of your ACA plan and protect your rights as a consumer.

How ACA Plans Features Benefit Real People: An Interview with a Health Insurance Consumer
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers some hidden benefits that many people may not be aware of, such as free preventive care services, essential health benefits, and additional benefits and services. These features can help consumers save money, get preventive care, and access additional services that are not typically covered by health insurance. To learn more about how these features benefit real people, we interviewed a health insurance consumer who is currently enrolled in an ACA plan and asked him about his experience and opinions. For privacy reasons, we will call him Mark (not his real name).
Mark, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sure. I’m 40 years old, and I work as a manager at a retail store. I have a wife and two kids, ages 12 and 15. I live in a suburban area in Texas.
How did you get your health insurance?
Well, I used to have health insurance through my employer, but they stopped offering it last year because of the economic downturn. They said it was too expensive and they couldn’t afford it anymore. So I had to find another option. I went online and checked out the health insurance marketplace, and I found out that I was eligible for a subsidized ACA plan. I chose the one that had the best balance between the monthly premium and the coverage for my needs.
How do you like your ACA plans?
I think it’s great. It covers all the essential health benefits, like preventive care, prescription drugs, mental health services, and emergency care. It also has some additional benefits that I didn’t know about, like coverage for pre-existing conditions, no annual or lifetime limits, and young adult coverage. I pay about $200 a month for the premium, which is affordable for me. I also get some financial assistance from the government to help me pay for the plan.
Do you have any complaints or suggestions about your ACA plan?
Not really. I mean, I wish it had more options for providers and hospitals, because sometimes I have to travel a bit to see a doctor or a specialist that is in-network. But other than that, I’m very satisfied with my plan. I think the ACA is a good thing, and it has helped me and my family a lot.
